Only 1 week to go to race day, the Tokyo Marathon will be on Sunday 3rd March 2019. As I am still nursing an injury, I have not been able to train this week. I suffered a bad fall during my handstand practise and have bruised ribs and have been in a lot of pain all week. There is not much one can do about this and was told to rest and ice it. I was given some pain killers and muscle relaxers and was told it will take time. I was worried I would not be able to run the race but I’m just going to listen to my body in the coming week and see how the ribs heal and take it day by day.

This week there was no running training. I took as much rest as I could whilst fitting in a busy work schedule. I managed to finalise my travel arrangements and took my mind of the pain and frustration of not training. I focused on my recovery. Taking my medication on time, resting and icing when I could. Meditation and light breath work were as much as I could managed. By Thursday I was able to go for a 5km walk around the Marina. Friday evening after work I went for a 7km walk around the Marina. Saturday evening, I managed a 10km walk and a cryotherapy session. I have tried cryotherapy before in the UK in the run up to my Chicago Marathon after my long runs and I found it helped with the recovery and reduced soreness. Cryotherapy helps reduce inflammation and improves blood flow and circulation and hopefully help speed up the recovery of the bruised ribs.

Sunday, the pain in ribs seems to be improving. It still hurts when I take deep breaths, but I can move my arms with full range of movements with a lot more ease. I have finished my five-day prescription of muscle relaxers and still have pain killer to help reduce the pain especially in the evening when I am in bed. It is still difficult to lie on my right side of the body and the pain is keeping me awake at night. I am optimistic that I will take part in the race and jog, run and walk it if I must on the day. There is still time so finger cross I will be at the start line next Sunday and more importantly cross the finish line and gain my fourth Abbots World Marathon Majors finisher medal and my fourth star.

The week ahead will be focused on fuelling, carb loading, diet, travel, rest and recovering from jet lag for race day. I will be traveling on Wednesday evening from Dubai and arriving into Narita Airport on Thursday afternoon. Let the adventures begin! Very much looking forward to meeting fellow marathoners and meeting new friends and sharing the marathon journey with everyone on race day.

Safe travels to everyone heading to Tokyo Marathon.

Happy running!
